Want to start living your purpose yet have no idea what it might be? This is hands-down the one of the most frustrating places to be in. Here are 3 big ideas to finding your purpose, that you can start taking action on today.
Tip #1: Go With the Obvious
Although finding your purpose in life may seem like some complicated task, more often than not it’s a lot closer than you might think.
In other words: let it be obvious.
The fastest way to this is to imagine that an ALIEN is looking down at your life right now – what would they point at and OBVIOUSLY notice to say, “Yep, that’s her thing.”
What folders in your computer are constantly growing in size? What area of interest are you helplessly drawn to? What passion or skill or path seems to be beating a path to your doorstep?
Although our minds love to complicate things, more often than not your purpose is right under your nose. Look at your life from that perspective and let the answer be obvious.
Tip #2: Sit in “Sacred Solitude”
Ever noticed that after a binge session of watching X-Factor videos on YouTube you want to be a singer? Or after watching UFC fighting or a martial arts movie you suddenly want to become a fighter?
Fact is, we humans are highly impressionable beings.
But when it comes to finding your life purpose, it is absolutely an internal thing. Rather than being found somewhere outside of yourself, it’s the other way around. Your purpose starts as a tiny burning coal of passion WITHIN, and then blasts out into the world.
The fastest, most effective way to drill down into your truth and discover your purpose is to sit in what I like to call “sacred solitude.” No TV, no alerts, no distractions. Just sit alone in a quiet space doing nothing. Despite being so simple, this is the hardest thing for most people to do (myself included). But when it comes to finding your purpose in life, it works.
As Lao Tzu put it, “Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving until the right action arises by itself?”
Try setting aside 15 minutes per day, and dedicate it to simply sit in solitude. Not forcing or expecting anything, but just “letting your mud settle” as you sit in that quiet space with an erect spine.
Clarity arises from that space.
Tip #3: Just Start Somewhere
The final secret to finding your life purpose is to JUST. START. SOMEWHERE.
Although this may seem to contradict Tip #1, the biggest mistake most people make when trying to discover their purpose is that they want to sit back in an armchair and THINK IT OUT. They’re thinking goes like this: “Once I’m 100% certain that yes, ‘X path is my purpose,’ then I’ll go and take action.”
The problem is it doesn’t work that way.
As business coach Marie Forleo teaches, clarity arises from taking action. Clarity comes from stepping into things. When you sense that a particular path may be the life work that will make you come alive, step into it.
Sign up for that course. Start taking those photos. Start a blog and publish a post each week. Whatever your path, start taking baby steps today.
Waiting until you are 100% certain is a losing game because you’re never going to feel 100% certain. Hesitation just leads to even more confusion and uncertainty.
Bonus Tip: Hire a Purpose Coach
So these are my 3 big ideas on finding your life purpose that I hope you find them useful and can start taking action on today. But of course the fast track to finding your purpose for many people is quite simply to hire a purpose coach.
Why? Because a good purpose coach can often “see you” better than you can see yourself, and help you uncover the work that taps into your unique genius + makes you come alive.
