One of the most common problems I see with people today is that we distrust our own inner knowing and outsource our wisdom.
How did it come to be this way? Well, it’s built into our culture starting since our early days in school. Despite all the good intentions of our parents and teachers, most of us were trained away from our own inner guidance system since Day 1:
— We were taught that our intuition was LESS TRUSTABLE than the answer in the back of the book.
— We were told that our gut feeling was INVALID against the red ink of the teacher’s pen.
Along the path from school to University we were groomed to take a “head-centred” approach to our path and decisions, and by the time we hit graduation we’d become expects at doing sh*t we hate. We grew into adults who are great at being “good little boys and girls,” yet distrust of the voice of our own heart.
We learned to ignore our intuition, viewing it less valid and less trustable than the “right” answer.
And this is the point where many of us are today, where the act of following your heart’s desires over the “smart choice” is absolutely REVOLUTIONARY – especially when it goes against the mainstream flow. Doing so often pits us against our peers and their resistance:
— “Be reasonable”
— “How is THAT going to make money?”
— “What are the odds you’re going to make it?”
And so we outsource our wisdom. We eat the diet from the government food pyramid that was handed to us vs. listening to our bodies. We follow the career steps that are parents and peers and advisors point us towards. We poll our friends and family when faced with a big life decision, and choose the majority vote (because that MUST be the right choice, right?).
Even those of us on the growth path often end up relying on advice from an “expert” or “enlightened” source for permission to act. When our hearts call us towards more scary, deeper waters, we shakily look to some enlightened expert like Eckhart Tolle or some trusted self help author say before we dare to take our first step.
The problem with this approach is that it leaves you constantly feeling unsteady at every turn. Second guessing each choice and walking on eggshells as you constantly look in all directions for approval or permission from whatever sources you trust before we take the next big, bold step.
A BETTER WAY: TAP INTO YOUR INNER WISDOM
A more empowering and real source of infinite wisdom comes when you make the bold switch to start listening for answers to your questions WITHIN.
Go alone to your room, shut the outside world out and and sit with the problem or decision that’s been bothering you. Hold it up against your inner wisdom: ask the question to yourself and simply wait for the answer.
As Byron Katie says, “Anything you want to ask a teacher, ask yourself, and wait for the answer in silence.”
Don’t try to force or even expect anything, but rather just wait in that space of receptive silence. Be with it.
This process has been one of the most empowering shifts I have ever made. You will be amazed by the wisdom that comes back, and as you do it more and more you start to realize the INVALUABLE source of wisdom that you have within you – free and 100% accessible at all times.
… But more than that, as you start to receive better and more personalized wisdom you begin to rely less and less on external advice and/or validation from the outside world.
