For the 2014 Football World Cup in Brazil there is an amazing video they put out called “The Game Before The Game,” which is one of the best videos I’ve seen that captures raw life, and what I call energetically “taking the rocket up”:
A father is speaking with his son (Nemar) before the big game. He is calm, and giving his final words as he sits and prepares amidst all the mounting pressure and craze that surrounds him before the biggest game of his life.
Police escorts. Building crowds. The world’s eyes are descending on this gigantuous match.
“Today is another important day in our lives.
So today run… run like it’s the last day of your life.
Run like you’re a crazy man chasing happiness.
Run for your family and your friends. Today be happy, enjoy football. Alright?
But there is one more thing… It’s important you don’t hold back.”
This is it. This is the source of life itself – concentrated and condensed into this 5-minute video. Personally I don’t give a fuck about the match nor the marketing here. Rather, I’m interested in the truths that it reveals:
As Steve Chandler puts it, “if you’re going to win anything — a race, yourself, your life— you have to go a little berserk.”
Let it get emotional. Intense. Let it get a bit crazy. The rocket should be shaking a bit violently with screws coming loose as it blasts up into the sky. You must be willing for the wheels to come off as you scream through the streets with your work, and with your life.
Good work – genius level work – must be a primal scream that pierces through the jungle. You must not hold back for anything or anyone.
You must blast up through the roof, to break every barrier and stretch as far as you can in each and every direction.
— Steve Jobs knew this when he said you are already naked.
— Meditators know this when they say if you meet Buddha on the road, kill him.
Something incredible happens, and something special is reached, when you are willing to DIE for what you are doing. That level of energy must be touched, and lifted up, in order for something magnificent to happen… For a piece of heaven to come down to grace these bleak streets that we walk on each and every day.
Of course Van Gogh cut a piece of his ear off. Of course Tom Cruise is a religious nut in order to deliver that insane level of performance. Of course Michael Jordan’s tongue is sticking out as he flies through the air like a fucking eagle from the free throw line to dunk.
You are as David Deida puts it, standing naked in your bathroom naked with a hard-on, singing, with a gun pointed at the door willing to shoot the first person who walks in.
This is the fire of sex. The heart of hunt. Fuck the rules and fuck anybody’s reactions – all bets are off. All political niceties and safety nets are cast aside as you step in to create something pure and powerful for the betterment of us all.
Ramp up that crazy and channel it into your work. Shift up and up and up, and pour every single ounce of it into something magnificent, and worth it for us to stop and watch and drink in.
Inspire with THAT level of energy.
Create something from THAT place.
You need this level of kind of insanity. You become a conductor for real life and energy to pour THROUGH you. This is simply required. You voice holds weight. There is weight in your eyes, your glance. You command power without lifting a finger or uttering a single word. You spontaneously spew poetry from your lips…
